Inserting symbols in Microsoft Word

I need to type up a document that has been written in French and need to add in a special symbol – how do I do this?

You can either hold down the Alt key on your keyboard and using the number pad, enter in the relevant code if you know it eg Alt 0233 inserts é.

To view the whole list of symbols, go to Word, Insert, Symbol, select your Font from the dropdown menu and scroll through the symbols.

Displayed at the bottom is the Shortcut key eg Alt +0231 will insert ç

These codes can be used in many programs.
